Sandhills

Willy Tjungurrayi is the brother of George Ward Tjungarrayi and the late Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi.

He was born c1932 at Patjantja, southwest of Lake Mackay in the Northern Territory. He came to Haast’s Bluff in 1956 with other Pintupi people and began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1976. He now lives at Walungurru (Kintore) in the Northern Territory.

Willy paints stories from the Tingari Dreaming song cycle, and the land around Haast’s Bluff, Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay) and Kaakuratintja (Lake MacDonald). Willy Tjungarrayi’s work is much sought after and is held many major private and public collections in Australia and Internationally.
